Inkborn – Pixel Art Boss Animations

Inkborn is a custom black-and-white pixel art boss designed for an indie game. The creature is a sentient mass of ink — part monster, part machine — with dripping tentacles, jagged teeth, and staring eyes. The challenge was to keep the animation fluid and unsettling while working entirely in a 1-bit palette with carefully placed white highlights to sell the wet, viscous texture.
Three animations were created:

Idle – a subtle breathing loop with tentacles slithering out of sync and ink droplets falling from the eyes.

Rise Up – a 22-frame spawn sequence where the creature oozes from a puddle, forms its body and tentacles, and its eyes and mouth spin into place before snapping open. Built to play both forward (spawn) and in reverse (death/melt).

Projector Transformation – a grotesque one-shot where the eyes and mouth merge into a white face hole, revealing a vintage film projector inside before a final bright flash.

The client wanted the original artwork left completely untouched, so all animations were built directly on top of the 120×100 character sprite. This preserved every pixel of their design while still allowing the motion to expand beyond the base canvas when needed.

A fun lesson in making low-frame-count animation feel smooth, wet, and alive — and a reminder that even strict constraints (1-bit color, no redesign) can lead to creative, expressive results.
