I created a custom pixel art proof of concept for Pokémon Aether Online, a fan‑made MMO project. The goal was to design a single static player base sprite to test scale, proportions, readability, and overall art direction in‑game alongside existing NPCs and maps.
This project was a low‑cost, low‑risk first step before committing to a full character system with male/female base characters, 4‑direction walking animations, and a modular customization framework.
The sprite was based on MMO‑style references provided by the client (sprite333, sprite436, sprite291, etc.). These references established the visual language – 1‑pixel outline, 2‑tone shading, 3/4 perspective, and semi‑chibi proportions – without copying exact dimensions.
The client wanted a character that would fit naturally alongside existing NPCs while maintaining enough readability and detail to support future customization (hairstyles, shirts, pants, backpacks, etc.).
Client Feedback
"The scale and proportions are much closer now, and I appreciate the feedback and revisions. The proof of concept has served its purpose. It gave me a clearer understanding of what I like, what I don't like, and what visual direction I may want to take the project."
