1-Bit Giant Killer Wasp | Top-Down RPG Sprite

A custom 4-directional top-down monster sprite created for an upcoming indie RPG.

The goal for this piece was to step away from the typical "cute" or "cartoon" RPG aesthetic and aim for an anatomically grounded, "actual bug" feel. I focused on realistic proportions—giving it a smaller head, mandibles, dangling legs in the side views, and a prominent striped abdomen.

To bring the wings to life without losing the retro aesthetic, I utilized a precise checkerboard dithering technique. This creates a translucent motion-blur effect during its 3-frame flying cycle.

Technical Specs:

Canvas/Grid: 48x48 pixels per frame (Standard RPG Maker MZ sizing)

Palette: 1-Bit (Pure Black & White)

Animation: 3-Frame continuous flight cycle (4 directions)

Software: Aseprite
